:- from Anne P. Mitchell -- HALL OF FAME : As Timely - Nay, as NEEDED - Today as it Was Back Then! ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael D. MCKinney -- deism : George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, Neil Armstrong and Thomas Paine were all deist. Strong believers in GOD but not fans of Religions. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from artfooldodger -- An excellent read! : This book is filled with common sense truths. I first read this book on line several years ago and was struck by the brutal honesty put forth. The author uses the bible alone to disprove the bible. Just a logical plain reading of the text mixed in with some down to earth common sense reasoning and it's easy to see the sheer fallacy of it all. The amount of human lives that were tragecially ended in the name of religion is staggering, and still goes on today. Each life taken creates a new enemy for the killers... on all sides; and there can be no end, for the need for revenge is a persistent human trait. Perhaps a trip through this book will enlighten a few. One can only hope. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Clarence Novak -- Best and most important book I ever read. : Not for the comfortable in their faith tru believers. But if you have an open and curious mind, this one's for you. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from dasigngal -- A Great Piece of Literature : I was raised with the Christian Ethic, but not in the Church proper. I was evangelized and attended church as a young adult of my own accord. I am so glad I was exposed to the teachings of the Bible and continue to mine the gems there. Age of Reason speaks to the thinking person and although at times very hard against the Christian faith, it echoes many of the questions I had and have from prior study. I am very taken with Thomas Paine's writings. In many ways it strengthens my convictions as it challenges them. His style makes me chuckle at times. What a great Patriot and scholar! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Julia E. Hubbel -- Required reading for religious scholars : For those who would love a good, thoughtful, intelligent and logical take on the Bible, this is a hoot to read. As someone who studies religion but doesn't have one to call her own, this book will provide hours of excellent, thoughtful prose. And a great deal of laughter. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rich -- Brilliant Religious Discussion : A brilliant work that reads almost like a modern piece of writing. The sheer scope of evidence offered as well as the arguments presented make this a must-read for anyone who seriously contemplates the role of religion and belief in our scoiety. I would suggest this as a must read for everyone preparing for a life in the religious sector - whether minister or priest or rabbi or imam. These are not necessarily individual arguments that need to be addressed (though they are pretty staggering as such); but taken as a whole, a truly "person of faith" needs to explain (to himself, if no one else) how these items Paine presents fit into the beliefs held so strongly. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jackie M -- Highly recommended. : This is a very interesting book with a very easy-to-read writing style, albeit over 200 years old. (Paine particularly wanted it to be easy-to-read so that it would be available to as many people as possible.) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2015 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from F Henwood -- Still Deserves a Place on a Freethinker's Bookshelf : It has been said of Tom Paine that he was the father of the American Revolution. "Without the pen of the author of `Common Sense', the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain,' John Adams once wrote of him. Yet Adams came to despise Paine, as did so many members of the Republic he had done so much to serve. When Paine died in penury in 1809, only six people attended his funeral (two of them reportedly freed black men). ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2011 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sham Bolic -- The format is awful : This review is about the format of the book, not what is written by the author. The print is tiny and really difficult to read. It’s also in fully blocked format, with as much as possible squeezed on to each page. There is no index either. Very disappointed and highly unlikely I will endeavour to read it. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Wallace -- This is one of the best books I have ever read : This is one of the best books I have ever read. I thought it would be a difficult read because of the time it was published (around the 1790s) .However it felt as though Thomas Paine was actually in the room with me . Really thought provoking .Can't wait to read one of his other works "common sense " ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from daisycow -- The Age of Reason (Optimized for Kindle) : This is an excellent and easily readable example of the out-pourings of a brilliant and critically thinking mind. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2013 )
